Lenovo ThinkPad T410-Review

Post by Sharat | February 10, 2010 | Laptops, Lenovo, Reviews | Comment

We live in times when most business buyers of laptops seem to be trending towards sacrificing the performance of their machine in favour of ever lighter laptops.
Some buyers however continue to philosophically subscribe to the notion that a more powerful machine means that resource intensive tasks can be completed sooner rather than later.

The Lenovo ThinkPad T410 may not have the sleekest design in the world, but it certainly punches above its weight, and can be described as perhaps the fastest most powerful business laptop affordable by the smallest corporate budget.

Design

Perhaps the most frustrating thing about the ThinkPad T410 is its design. Design was clearly not a huge factor in product development. The laptop is thick black, and lacks any aesthetics that many manufacturers have begun incorporating into their offerings.

Instead of incorporating sleek alloys into the chassis, the ThinkPad T410 uses plastics, something that may be off putting if you’re trying to portray that trendy look. Despite the fact it isn’t the coolest looking device; it is sturdy and shock proof, designed around the principles that have protected its predecessors from damage.

Adding features and making the machine fast have the undesirable consequence of piling on weight. The ThinkPad T410 weighs 5.5 pounds and is heavier than its ancestor the T400 which comes in at 5.2 pounds.

Regardless of the fact that it is not the most polished design, the laptop provides one of the best user experiences in the laptop world. The keys are large, easily accessible and the level of spacing has been improved. The track-pad has incorporated a dual pointing system, complete with Lenovo’s Trackpoint technology, which compared to rivals is a heavenly user experience.

The screen is 14-inch widescreen and comes with the perfect resolution of 1,440-by-900, which is much higher than comparable laptops with similar sized screens from rival manufacturers.

Features

Rather than dumping features in order to lighten the load, as is the case with the other offerings, the T410 actually adds them. You won’t have to worry about finding docking space, or look for a place to connect external hubs or expansion cards.

The laptop comes with a generous 4 USB ports, one of which can be used to power external peripherals even when the laptop is off. The laptop provides a SmartCard reader, a multi card reader, and an ExpressCard slot. Whilst the DisplayPort and VGA output give you the choice of connecting either an external monitor or projector. For the latest storage technologies, the T410 has a dedicated E-SATA port as well.

The T410 ships with a wide variety of of wireless connections, including mobile broadband (Gobi 2000), Intel 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS.

As far as I am concerned, there are some things that are far more important when it comes to choosing a laptop than looks. The user experience of the Lenovo ThinkPad T410 is unrivalled in the world of business laptops. It balances perfectly between performance and battery life, and though whilst clearly not being a laptop for the frequent business traveller, it should be the preferred choice for every other business user.
