US PC Manufacturers May Become An Extinct Species
Sounding a note of warning to its US rivals Acer founder Stan Shis says that US computer manufacturers face extinction over the next twenty years.
In an interview with a Taiwanese newspaper, Mr. Shih says he believes that the market will demand that manufacturers offer cheaper priced computers, and that American company’s do not understand how to turn a product with an increasingly commoditised price into a successful strategy.
“The trend for low-priced computers will last for the coming years, but U.S. computer makers just don’t know how to put such products on the market. U.S. computer brands may disappear over the next 20 years, just like what happened to U.S. television brands.” Shih told the paper.
Less than a decade ago Acer was nothing more than a would be, but now occupies the position of second largest computer manufacturer usurping US based giant Dell for the position.
According to IDC, last quarter the world’s largest computer manufacturer is US based Hewlett Packard which has a worldwide market share of 20.2 per cent. Acer the second largest manufacturer controls 14.4 per cent of global market share, whilst Dell in third position captured 17.7 per cent of worldwide sales. The big three manufacturers are followed by China’s Lenovo and Japan’s Toshiba respectively.
