Steve Jobs Expected To Unveil iCloud Service Next Week

June 4, 2011 · Filed Under Apple, Apple Mac Computers · Comment

Steve Jobs, the iconic chief executive of Apple Computers which trades in the country as Apple Computers Australia , is expected to make a rare appearance next week as an event intended to unveil a new online media storage and streaming service.

The service which is being dubbed the iCloud, will according to Apple, provide computing power and data streaming over the internet. Mr. Jobs will also be showing of a number of software upgrades during the conference, including Lion, the Mac OSX operating system, as well as its next generation mobile operating system iOS 5.
Speculation however remains firmly centred on the launch of the company’s cloud based multimedia offering that will be pitting the company against both Amazon and Google as all company’s seek to capture the market for consumers wanting to store and stream their media over the internet.

So far Apple Computers Australia has reached agreements with three of the four major record labels, and its move to provide a cloud offering is critical to the company staying competitive, as open source software such as Android becomes increasingly popular.

It would be very characteristic of Apple to enter an established market late and find itself dominant using its own proprietary technology. When the company launched the iPod in 2001 it quickly came to dominate the market for MP3 players, and it would be hard to argue that the iPhone was the first smartphone.

An aggressive move in the potentially lucrative market for cloud computing could enable the technology icon sustain its torrid growth, which many investors see as being defensive.

The iCloud service is expected to include a redesigned version of the Apple’s virtually unknown MobileMe storage service, and comes at a time when rivals including Google and Amazon are all vying to be the online hub for consumers wanting access to their media.

iPad and iPhone Looking Increasingly Dominant In Enterprise Segment

May 17, 2011 · Filed Under Apple, Smart-Phones, Tablet · Comment

Whilst Android may be the dominant consumer mobile operating system,  Apple continues its upward trajectory in the enterprise segment with its iOS operating system according to Intermedia a hosting provider of Microsoft Exchange.

According to the company 61 per cent of the smartphones owned by its 320,000 enterprise customers are iPhones, 17 per cent of devices used by the company’s customers ran Android. The iPad however is the clear dominant device in the tablet segment of the market.

The remaining 22 per cent of devices were from the “others” category which includes Palm, Symbian, and Windows Phone devices. The iPhone saw its share of all activations increase to 64 per cent during April, whilst Android experienced an increase of 33 per cent in terms of all new devices that were purchases online during the same month.

Statistics from Intermedia do not include BlackBerry devices, since those devices do not make use of ActiveSync.

iPads account for 99.8 percent of all new tablet activations, with the tiny fraction that remains split between the Samsung Galaxy Tab,  Motorola Xoom, and Huawei S7.

iPad adoption in the enterprise segment is indeed quite impressive, and according to Apple which trades in the country as Apple Computers Australia nearly 75 per cent of Fortune 500 companies are either already actively using the device or testing it for deployment. Apple said that nearly 88 per cent of Fortune 500 companies are doing the same with the iPhone.

The success of the iPad in the enterprise segment of the market is due to Apple’s ability to execute, bringing a tablet to market as a fully finished product that has both a smooth and dependable user experience, something Google has been unable to replicate with Android.

IT managers are far less likely to take risks with unproven platforms than consumers are, and whilst Android maybe highly successful with the latter, it has yet to prove itself to be comparable to iOS in terms of stability, regardless of whether one is comparing tablets or smartphones.

The other thing working in Apple’s favour is that Android is said to be much less secure than iOS, which is likely to drive a stake of fear through any IT manager who is already dealing with the risks that come with integrating consumer devices into the enterprise segment. Finally, Android OS fragmentation is a considerable issue when it comes to being able to provide comprehensive IT support.

Whilst Android is clearly dominant in the consumer segment of the market, it would appear that Apple is making ever increasing inroads into the highly prized enterprise segment in large part due to the iPad, which may even result in iOS one day becoming the dominant operating system for the business world.

Apple Is The World’s Most Valuable Brand

May 13, 2011 · Filed Under Apple, Apple Computers, News · Comment

Apple Inc, which trades in the country as Apple Computers Australia, maker of the iMac, iPhone and iPad, has overtaken Google and according to global advertising agency WPP, is now the world’s most valuable brand.

WPP says that the value of Apple’s brand grew by 84 per cent over the last year and estimates its value at $153.3 billion, compared with Google, whose brand value fell by 2 per cent and is valued at $111.5 billion. Rounding out the top four brands are IBM, whose brand value rose by 17 per cent helping it leapfrog last year’s number 3 McDonald’s

Refreshed versions of the iMac and iPhone as well as the successful launch of its iPad tablet device has helped Cupertino California based Apple generate an astonishing near doubling in sales and profits during its most recent quarter. In May last year Apple reached another milestone when it overtook Microsoft to become the most valuable technology company as measured by market capitalisation.

“It’s clear that every single Apple employee, from Steve Jobs and Tim Cook to the summer interns, see protecting and nurturing that brand as a top priority,” Millward Brown Chief Executive Officer Eileen Campbell wrote in the report. “Tablet computing also drove value growth not just for Apple, but also for the providers who support yet another networked device.”

Apple Unveil New Improved iMac

May 7, 2011 · Filed Under Apple, Apple Mac Computers, Apple Reviews, Reviews · Comment

Apple Australia are as pleased as punch with the latest reincarnation of the iMac that hits stores across the country, and trust me, this one is an absolute beauty. As an avid Mac head myself, I have become quite accustomed to my old school G5 tower and Macbook Pro as my standard computers of choice for both work, play, and creating music (which is a bit of both). But having now had a look at the configurations and screen size of this truly remarkable feat of ingenuity, I’m thinking maybe it’s time for me to upgrade. After all, who wants to live forever!

There was a time when the iMac wouldn’t really be considered as a ‘hardcore’ computer for things such as music production and video editing, but from looking at the latest specs, this monster will give any tower a run for its money. Plus, look at the size of that screen!

An Apple spokesperson said -

These next-generation processors feature an integrated memory controller for an amazingly responsive experience and a powerful new media engine for high-performance video encoding and decoding.

The 27inch model needs to be in my life, and I’ve already started looking at the calendar to work out how and when I get get the pennies together to sample it’s delights. With a 1TB hard drive fitted as standard, the larger of the two machines is definitely the one to keep your eye on. I know I will be, and with a new copy of Logic Pro alongside this bad boy, you may not see me again till next year, or MTV, whichever comes first.

Well, you’ve heard enough from me, I love it and I want one more than I want world peace. That may mean I never make the Miss World finals, but I may compose the theme tune!

Apple Collects Location Data Of iPhone And iPad users

May 2, 2011 · Filed Under Apple, Apple Computers, News · Comment

Apple Inc, which trades in the country as Apple Computers Australia has been secretly storing and recording the movement details of iPhone and 3G iPad owners according to researchers.

Security experts Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden say that the devices record location data which is kept hidden in an unencrypted file that can be used to map exactly where a user has been using the right software.

Apple has remained silent on the revelation, which is in fact a tacit admission, though it must be said that it has not been suggested that the company has been using the information.

iPhones and iPads do not as such visually indicate to their users that such data is in fact being recorded. However although the practice is not explicitly stated, it does appear to be covered in the company’s terms of use.

“We may collect information such as occupation, language, zip code, area code, unique device identifier, location, and the time zone where an Apple product is used so that we can better understand customer behaviour and improve our products, services, and advertising”

Mr. Allan and Mr. Warden say they are unaware why iPhones and iPads were collecting location information but it was “clearly intentional”.

Apple Initiates Legal Action Against Samsung Claiming Galaxy Devices Copy iPad And iPhone

April 19, 2011 · Filed Under Apple, News, Tablet · Comment

Apple Inc, which trades in the country as Apple Computers Australia has initiated legal action against rival Samsung Electronics, claiming the company’s Galaxy suite of products which include phones and a range of tablet devices, infringe Apple patents, and the trademark look of its benchmark iPhone and iPad products.

According to Apple, Samsung has infringed the company’s patents by developing devices which run on the Android operating system which were specifically designed to mimic the way Apple products work. Apple claims that the way Galaxy devices work including the use of on screen hand gestures, as well the colour and shape of the devices violate Apple’s patent rights.

“It’s no coincidence that Samsung’s latest products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad, from the shape of the hardware to the user interface and even the packaging,” said Steve Dowling, a spokesman for Cupertino, California-based Apple. “This kind of blatant copying is wrong, and we need to protect Apple’s intellectual property when companies steal our ideas.”

Apple is also currently engaged in separate legal action against HTC Corp, in which the company’s lawyers, appearing before a Federal trade panel in Washington claimed that HTC is also infringing Apple patents. Last month when Apple chief Steve Jobs unveiled the second generation iPad, he referred to Samsung as well as other rival makers of tablet devices as competing to make 2011 the “Year of Copycats.”

“Samsung’s development of core technologies and strengthening our intellectual property portfolio are keys to our continued success,” Kim Titus, a spokesman for the Suwon, South Korea-based company, said. “Samsung will respond actively to this legal action taken against us through appropriate legal measures to protect our intellectual property.”

Samsung, the second-largest recipient of U.S. patents last year, is also a supplier to Apple, providing components including memory chips.

According to Apple, Samsung has infringed upon seven of its patents, in particular ones relating to the way its Galaxy devices interpret user gestures, including selecting, scrolling, pinching and zooming. Apple also claims that the company has infringed three design patents.

Apple also accuses Samsung of stealing the rectangular shape and rounded corner design of both the iPhone and its on screen icons, furthermore the Apple claims that Samsung has also copied the packaging.

“Instead of pursuing independent product development, Samsung has chosen to slavishly copy Apple’s innovative technology, distinctive user interfaces, and elegant and distinctive product and packaging design, in violation of Apple’s valuable intellectual property rights,” Apple said in the complaint.

Apple is seeking compensation and wants the court to block future use of its trademarks and patents.

Apple Achieves Dominance In Teen Market

April 11, 2011 · Filed Under Apple, Apple Computers, News · Comment

A new survey suggests that Apple, which trades in the country as Apple Computers Australia has managed to achieve dominance with teenagers, having achieved 17 per cent mobile phone market share with its iPhone offering in the teen segment of the market. A further 37 per cent of those polled indicated they were interested in buying an iPhone within six months.

The survey conducted by investment bank Piper Jaffray polled 4,500 high school students, and found that the company continues to dominate the teen segment of the market, a market which has show surprisingly quick adoption of tablets.

“Apple’s dominance in the mobile and online music markets is going seemingly unchecked, coupled with rising interest in the iPhone and iPad,” the survey concluded.

The proportion of teenagers who owned an iPhone leapt from 14 per cent in October 2010, to 17 per cent in the spring of 2011. The number of teenagers who expressed an interest in buying an iPhone rose from 33 per cent to 37 per cent during the same time frame. Piper Jaffrey says that intent to buy has historically translated into market share gains.

“Interest among teens in purchasing an iPhone has grown steadily since Apple introduced the iPhone, and we expect this to continue,” Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster noted.

Apple Unveils Much Hyped iPad 2

March 2, 2011 · Filed Under Apple, Apple Computers, Apple Mac Computers, Tablet · Comment

So Apple which trades in the country as Apple Computers Australia finally confirmed all the rumours that have been swirling for the last few months and finally unveiled its second generation tablet device the iPad 2.

Of course not only was there speculation of the impending launch but much has been speculated about what new features the iPad 2 would come with. The iPad 2 will be powered by a dual core processor, which means it will be at par with its two nearest competitors the Xoom from Motorola and the PlayBook from BlackBerry. Apple also reckons that the new graphics would boost performance by a factor of nine.

The second generation tablet will come with back and front facing cameras, an omission which was strongly criticized in the first generation device and allows users to engage in video calling using FaceTime.

The iPad two will also be 33 per cent thinner than an iPhone 4 and weigh 0.2 pounds less than the first iPad. Battery life will supposedly stay the same, even with the increased power, and the price in the US will also remain at the $499 starting point.

The iPad 2 will run iOS 4.3 making the switch multifunctional and allowing it to act as either a mute button or a rotational lock. Both GarageBand and iMovie will also be coming to the iPad 2, with multi-track recording and HD sharing capabilities.

The second generation tablet did however leave some disappointed by its continued lack of a USB port, which would make the lives of business users so much easier. And some are puzzled by Apple’s insistence that iPad owners use its HDMI cable which costs US$39 and wonder whether standard cables will do.

Apple Continues To Dominate Market For Tablet Devices

March 2, 2011 · Filed Under Apple, Apple Computers, Apple Mac Computers, News, Tablet · Comment

ABI Research, a tech industry market research firm estimates that roughly 4.5 million tablet devices were sold during the third quarter of 2010, and of those, nearly 93 per cent were iPads, marketed in Australia by Apple Computers Australia.

ABI says the sales figures look extremely promising and senior practice director Jeff Orr in a statement said “Over time, Apple’s first-to-market iPad advantage will inevitably erode to some extent. ABI Research has been tracking media tablets since December 2009; future quarterly editions of this Market Data product will include market share tracking of all the major media tablet vendors.”

It comes as no surprise that Apple has managed to achieve dominance in the market for tablets having been the only option available to consumers until Samsung launched its Galaxy Tab. The Motorola Xoom was launched last week and has so far received some pretty good reviews.

ABI also looked at e-books and netbooks. E-books reader vendors “continued to do well,” the firm said, while the first half of 2010 was slow for netbooks. That was partially due to the fact that few companies introduced new netbooks.

“The third quarter saw PC OEMs again breathe life into the segment by introducing new platforms that offered dual-core processors, and lighter/thinner devices with significantly better performance, sleek styling, and visual appeal,” Orr said.
