Dell Finally Breaks The High End Laptop Market With Adamo XPS And Alenware M11x

For years computer manufacturing giant Dell has struggled to break in to the high end ultra chic laptop space currently dominated by Apple and Sony. Unfortunately the brand is largely synonymous with low cost, high volume 15-inch laptops.

Given that Dell laptops could be best described as your mum’s laptop manufacturer, it was a pleasant surprise that the company’s two most recent high end laptop offerings, the super slim 13-inch Adamo XPS, and the 11-inch Alienware M11x gaming netbook hit all the right notes with consumers, even if it is unlikely that the two models shift in large volumes.

Dell and its Australian Subsidiary Dell Australia have chased the holy grail of high end design laptops for years, most recently by acquiring speciality game PC maker Alienware. However its high end ambitions have largely remain unfulfilled, with the vast majority of its products entrenched in dorm room aesthetics.

Consumers have been able to order Dell products in a wide variety of designs and colours for a few years now. Its most promising offering, the original Adamo laptop, which the company cloaked in Apple like secrecy was marketed as being “a luxury-brand notebook design for the luxury-conscious consumer,” according to the company.

The final result however did not quite live up to expectations, producing a MacBook Air clone, that cost too much, and was too heavy (thought we must admit it did look nice).

With that sort of history, the expectations for Dell’s latest attempt to break the high end laptop segment were hardly feverish.

The Adamo XPS though is superb, super slim at 9.99 mm thick, it is something you need to experience in person to be able to appreciate. Its large footprint made it feel very much like a 15-inch laptop in spite of the smaller 13-inch screen. It’s only drawback was its battery life, which as you would expect for something so clearly designed for portability, did not last as long as we would have liked.

The other luxury offering from Dell is its Alienware M11x, a laptop that costs less than US$1000, but was still sleek enough to fit snugly into a messenger bag.

The M11x feels on slightly heavier than other 11-inch systems yet provides improved performance, albeit for a higher price compared to run of the mill netbook aesthetics. Compared to other 11-inch products, the M11x provides a great backlit keyboard, boasting edge to edge glass and comes with a 1,366×768-pixel display.

Dell Unveils Tablet At CES

January 12, 2010 · Filed Under Alienware Computers, Dell Computers · Comment

Last Thursday, computer manufacturing giant Dell revealed its prototype for a tablet PC, which the Round Rock Texas based company says it will launch along with its much talked about smart phone later in the year.

Dell introduced the Tablet in Las Vegas, at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES), and also showcased a refresh of Dell’s Studio and Inspiron line of laptops and debuted an 11-inch version of its Alienware range of gaming laptops.

Dell Computers Australia will probably release the products sometime after they have launched in the US.

Dell has joined the rush by computer manufacturers including Hewlett Packard and Lenovo amongst others in announcing the launch of a tablet PC in response to the highly anticipated introduction of a tablet device widely expected to be unveiled by Apple later this month.

For its part Apple has refused to confirm speculation it will unveil a device, and says as a matter of policy that it will not comment on future products.

The tablet device showcased at CES included a 5 inch display, and Dell says it should function more as a companion to a PC, rather than a standalone product.

Dell’s tablet provides the full web experience according to the company, and allows the user to access, maintain and share all digital content.

The price point for the product has yet to be determined, and consumers should be able to get their hands on one later in the year.

Dell Confirms Existence Of Powerful 11.6 Inch Alienware Gaming Netbook

January 11, 2010 · Filed Under Alienware Computers, Dell Computers, Laptops, Net Books, News · Comment

Computer manufacturer Dell Australia has confirmed the existence of an 11.6 inch gaming Netbook, which it says will cost less than US$1000.

Dell recently showed off the new model dubbed Dell Alienware M11X, after months of speculation, which in reality stretches the term netbook.

The netbook apparently has the ability to run Crysyis at 50 frames per second, because it allegedly contains a Nvidia GT335M switchable graphics chip.

Rumours suggest that the machine in gaming mode has a two hour battery life, and when run at lower levels of performance could last over six hours.

Details are still a little scant on the model, but more details are expected to emerge about the new model in the next few weeks.

Dell also showed off other models in the Alienware range including the M17x and Alienware M15X, both of which are available in Australia and are said to be the most powerful 15 inch and 17 inch laptops ever created.

Alienware Aurora Desktop Review

August 27, 2009 · Filed Under Alienware Computers, Reviews · Comment

Monsters. There, I’ve said it. Alienware unleash monsters onto the unsuspecting humanoids of this weak and feeble planet that we call Earth (a bit over dramatic I know!).

Now, I’ve had the pleasure and pain of reviewing a few desktops in my time (as that’s my job), but this piece of machinery is like encountering a different species of computer. Before I bog you down with all the technical specifications, watch this short film ‘Breed’, created by Alienware, which just goes to show their imaginary idealism of how an Alienware computer is created.

Wow. What kind of company goes our of their way to create such a magnificent advert? A company run by gamers, for gamers. In one word – ALIENWARE.

These bad boys will blow the socks off any near competitor for sheer power and upgradability. Alienware standard specifications are pretty mind blowing, but the add on’s take the company to a completely different stratosphere for gaming.

The Alien Aurora is an evil looking extra terrestrial that is available in such other worldly colour schemes as Cyborg Green, Saucer Silver and Space Black. You can even personalise the interior lighting system with
with a choice of Fusion Red, Lunar White, Nebula Aqua…

I presume you get the picture!

When unleashing the inner beast, there are a plethora of specifications to choose from, allowing the user to really tailor their own requirements to a tee. These include up to -

These computers were designed with serious gamers in mind, and the tech specs show you really cannot underestimate the power these machines possess – Alienware was created by gamers, for gamers.

With prices starting at $2,705 for a basic model, the Aurora’s price tag may seem a little steep to the untrained eye. But to those in the know, they will see this as money well spent on an essential lifestyle accompliment.

Alienware M17 Laptop Review

August 20, 2009 · Filed Under Alienware Computers, Reviews · Comment

Alienware M17Alienware computers are internationally renowned as one of the finest gaming machines providers on the planet…

but with a look that makes the machine bordering on the extra terrestrial!

The M17 is the first notebook in the world that can be upgraded to a quad core processor, delivering unpresidented power that will literally blow the competition away. These monster processors run at 2.53GHz, with the faster speeds allowing multitasking with ease and next generation gaming running as smooth as silk.

Obviously Alienware are world famous as a gaming machine, so the graphics card is always going to be a high priority not just for the consumer, but also for the developer. This is why the M17 now has the capabilty to be fitted with the awesome Radeon CrossFire X card, which can increase the laptops graphical capability by up to a whopping 80%! The CrossFire X also features ATI PowerPlay technology, which allows the M17 to monitor GPU usage and adjust the graphics power accordingly, so no lag or freezing at important moments.

Storage space is also a high priority for serious gamers, so how does upto a 1TB grab you?! I know, for a laptop that’s insane! This machine can be well and truely pimped out to the absolute maximum. 1TB has the capability to save around 150 games. Does anybody need 150 games?! I’m sure somebody does, and if they do, the M17 can cope with the demand without feeling the pinch.

The M17 is available in the ruggard Black Skullcap design (as pictured) or the super smooth Black Ripley, and also features touchpad functionality. Plus with facial recognition security, a highly futuristic method of making sure your computer is hard to access, it’s safe to say that the Alienware M17 really is light years ahead of it’s competitors.
