Michael Dell Says Company Remains Committed To PC Business
According to Michael Dell, chief executive of his eponymous firm Dell, which trades in this country as Dell Computers Australia, the company has very little interest in acquiring the PC business of Hewlett Packard, which was rumored to be up for sale under previous chief executive Leo Apotheker, who was fired just last week by the HP board.
Under Mr. Apotheker’s leadership, HP last month said it was considering the option of spinning off its Personal Computer business, and announced it was exiting the tablet computing space altogether.
Mr. Dell however believes his company should move in the opposite direction, and is a firm believer in the company’s hardware business, despite its anemic growth and low margins.
“We are very distinct from some of our competitors,” says Mr. Dell during an interview with the Financial Times “We believe the devices and the hardware still matter as part of the complete, end-to-end solution.” The scale of its PC operations, he says, gives Dell an advantage over competitors in the smaller but more lucrative server market.
“Think about the scale economies in our business. As a company spins off its PC business, it goes from one of the top buyers in the world of disk drives and processors and memory chips to not being one of the top five,” he says. “And that raises the cost of making servers and storage products. Ultimately we believe that presents an enormous opportunity for us and you can be sure we are going to seize it.”
Dell is the second largest PC manufacturer globally, as measured by number of units sold, and has a 12.9 per cent market share. By contrast, HP, the world’s largest PC maker has an 18.1 per cent global market share, according to industry analyst IDC. Dell ranks third in the service and storage business, behind IBM and HP.
IDC analyst Bob O’ Donnell believes that Dell is well positioned to take advantage of the business that HP may put up for sale, though whether the company continues to consider that option under new chief executive Meg Whitman is uncertain.
Should HP spin off its PC business, Dell will remain as one of the few computer manufacturers that offers both hardware and services, after rival IBM exited the space when it sold its PC business to Lenovo in 2005.
The personal computing industry has faced intense pressure over the last year as consumers in North America and Western Europe have migrated towards purchasing tablets and smartphones. Gartner, another industry analyst has substantially cut its forecast for global growth in sales of the sector. In August, Dell itself also cut its full year revenue growth guidance, and cited weakening demand from consumers, and order delays from its public sector customers.
Despite the negative sentiment, Mr. Dell is adamant that we are yet to enter a post PC world.
“There are a billion and a half PCs in the world and while Gartner change their estimates here and there, they also estimate there will be two billion PCs in the world by 2014. So when I look at that, I think the idea that the PC is no longer here is complete nonsense,” Mr. Dell told the FT.
“You see PCs, tablets, you see smartphones. But those other devices aren’t necessarily replacing the PCs, so we are very committed to that part of the business, as part of this broader, end-to-end IT solutions company,”
Mr. Dell says that growth in demand for personal computers will originate mainly from emerging markets such as India and China. China in particular is already a very large market for the company’s servers and storage products as a result of deals the company has struck with large domestic internet companies such as Tencent.
“Around 60 per cent of the Chinese internet runs on Dell,” Mr Dell says.
According to the Dell chief, the company remains committed to the difficult market for tablets, despite its streak offering which was introduced in 2010 not performing very well, and HP abandoning the segment altogether.
There has been speculation that the Dell intends to release a tablet device that would run on Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system in 2012, though in his interview with the Financial Times, the Dell chief refused to comment on whether or when the company would launch any new products. Mr. Dell did say however that the company is “very much in line” with the plans of Redmond based Microsoft on its plans to overhaul Windows so that it performs better as a tablet operating system.
“The line that separates a tablet and a laptop today will get very blurry and ultimately disappear as you see many new products,” he says.
“The trouble is how to differentiate, when there are 30 other vendors making tablets based on the Android operating system. Dell will have to look at how to position itself,” says IDC’s Mr O’Donnell who also says that Dell’s strategy may well eventually pay off.
“The services business is always hard. I am not sure anyone has really got it right. But there will be times when they can win business by offering the combination of hardware and services,” he says. “How often that will happen is unclear, but those opportunities should increase over time.”
