Lenovo Chief Executive Acquires 8 Per Cent Stake In Company
Yang Yuanqing, chief executive of Lenovo Group, which trades in the country as Lenovo Computers Australia, has purchased roughly 8 per cent of outstanding Lenovo shares for roughly US$404 million.
Mr. Yang bought the shares from the company’s largest shareholder Legend Holdings according to a press release issued by Lenovo Coupons on Friday.
Mr. Yang increasing his stake in the company he runs comes at a time when the company, the fourth largest PC manufacturer in the world, and the fastest growing is struggling to define its direction. In 2005 Lenovo made a transformational acquisition of IBM’s PC business, and in 2009 decided it would focus on its key domestic market China, where it is incumbent, and other emerging markets, largely in response to demand in mature markets plunging following the global financial crisis.
However the company has begun developing a range of hand held internet enabled devices such as smartphones and tablets, and earlier in the month, announced the acquisition of German consumer electronics manufacturer and retailers Medion AG, as part of its strategy to capture greater market share in its mature market consumer segment.
Mr. Yang purchased 797 million shares from Legend, taking his personal stake in the company to 8.7% and leaving Legend with approximately 35% and maintaining its position as Lenovo Groups single largest shareholder.
“While the transaction is a personal financial matter, I want to be very clear that my decision to make this investment is based on my strong belief in the company’s very bright future,” Mr. Yang said in a statement.
The deal was undertaken with the intention of aligning further the interests of management with shareholders, Legend spokesperson Gui Lin said, adding that the Legend Holdings is completely satisfied with the Lenovo’s managerial performance, but was not willing to say whether Legend would further pare down its stake in the company.
Last month Lenovo reported a tripling of profits from $13 million to $42 million driven by a wave of hardware replacements by its corporate clients the company said.Revenue rose 13% to $4.88 billion from $4.32 billion.
Legend Holdings is a diversified conglomerate, that has a number of interests beyond Lenovo including Real Estate development, Private Equity and Venture Capital. According to chairman Liu Chuanzhi, who also chairs Lenovo’s board, Legend intends to list its shares in Hong Kong sometime between 2014 and 2016, with the company’s subsidiary units listing following the listing of their parent.
Legend founded Lenovo, which went public in 1994.

Lenovo IdeaPad S100 Running MeeGo
MeeGo, the operating system from Intel based on Linux has not had an easy time of things, having to compete with the likes of Google and Apple. However a few manufacturers most notably Lenovo have breathed a little bit of life into the OS beginning with the Lenovo IdeaPad S100.
The IdeaPad S100 from Lenovo Coupons on the outside looks just like any other netbook, but the main attraction aside from the regular things reviewers tend to write about is the MeeGo experience.
Everything is laid out in “Panels” so each application has a “Panel” for example the “People Panel” is where social networks, IM clients and Flikr can be accessed. There is also a “Status Panel” into which all the social networks feed, and “Internet Panel” uses Google’s Chrome to surf the internet, with the “Media Panel” handling videos and photos.
For the most, the operating system is a smooth one, and working with it was a pleasant experience, nothing crashed, neither was there any waiting for loading or response, however we did find the Wi-Fi a little spotty.
The S100 comes with the usual netbook features that include three USB ports, Ethernet, and VGA (the X101 doesn’t have VGA and Ethernet). It runs on an Intel Atom N455 processor and 1GB of memory.
Lenovo Coupons has yet to officially announce the launch of the IdeaPad S100 which runs the MeeGo OS, but if it does, it is likely the model will be offered sub $200, which means that there may well be a lot of potential for it.
