Lenovo Third Quarter Profits Jump 25 Per Cent
Lenovo Group, the world’s fourth biggest PC manufacturer, which operates in the country as Lenovo Computers Australia has reported a 25 per cent increase in third quarter earnings, beating analyst expectations on declining component costs and customers replacing ageing machines.
For the three months ending December 31 2010, Lenovo reported net income of $99.7 million, up from $79.5 million in the previous year. Analysts had been estimating a net profit of $86.1 million. Lenovo’s revenue leapt by 22 per cent to $5.81 billion.
Lenovo strongly benefited from enterprise sales in key markets in the US, Europe and China, with businesses upgrading older machines running the Windows 7 operating system. Earlier in the month Lenovo announced a deal to acquire NEC’s personal computer business as it seeks to expand in Japan, the company is also doing brisk business in emerging markets such as India and Russia.
Rory Read, Lenovo’s chief operating officer said he believes that companies are approximately one third of their way through the current PC replacement cycle, which Mr. Read says will continue for at least another couple of years.
Lenovo which is head quartered in Raleigh North Carolina, said revenue from its key domestic China market grew by 18 per cent to $2.68 billion and contributed 46 per cent of the total group revenue. Revenue growth in China however was slower than the 34 per cent growth posted in its emerging market division which includes countries such as India Brazil and Russia.
Revenue at Lenovo’s mature-markets division, which includes its operations in the U.S. and western Europe, rose 22 percent to $2 billion.
Lenovo which in 2005 acquired the PC manufacturing business of International Business Machine Corp (IBM) accounted for nearly 10.4 per cent of global PC shipments during the last quarter according to market research firm IDC, making it the world’s fourth biggest PC maker by shipments.
