Apple Announce 10 Billion App Downloads

January 27, 2011 · Filed Under Apple, Apple Computers, Apple Mac Computers, News · Comment

Apple Australia are stunned to announce that everyone’s favourite gadget, the iPhone, has now reached the landmark figure of 10 BILLION downloads! The iPhone App Store was first launched back in 2008, and with more than 300,000 programs on offer, you can now pick up almost anything your heart desires.

With the recent release of the iPad, which already has over 40,000 specific Apps for it alone, the download figures look like they will simply grow and grow. Even I’m going to get an iPhone when I return from travelling around South America in May 2011, after all, what’s the point of seeing the world when you can hold it in the palm of your hand?!

I’m joking of course, though the way some people are addicted to their iPhones does sometimes make you wonder whether their entire existence depends on these amazing boxes of ingenuity. Personally I’m not sure I have what it takes to become an iPhone addict, though check back in a couple of months time and see if I’ve been sent as stir crazy by Angry Birds as my friends are!

Apple Has Ambitious Plans To Bundle Swipe And Pay Technology Into Hand Held Devices

January 26, 2011 · Filed Under Apple, Apple Computers, Apple Mac Computers, News, Smart-Phones, Tablet · Comment

Richard Doherty, director of consulting firm Envisioneering Group says that Apple Inc is gearing up to introduce technology to its devices that would enable iPhone and iPad owners to used them to make purchases.

The technology is known as “Near-Field Communication,” which can send a receive data to a distance of 4 inches, and is likely to be embedded in next generation versions of the iPhone and iPad according to Mr. Doherty.

New versions of both products are likely to be launched this year Mr. Doherty said citing unnamed engineering sources who are working on Apple’s hardware.

The service provided by Apple will be able to utilize information the company already has on file including credit card numbers, iTunes gift-card balances and bank data, which would make it a formidable alternative to other payment programs from Visa, MasterCard and even PayPal.

Introducing the technology would enable Apple to obtain a slice of the nearly $6.2 trillion Americans spend annually on goods and services. Currently Apple pays credit card processing fees on every purchase made using iTunes. By encouraging its customers to use cheaper alternatives such a direct debit from bank accounts in the same way purchases are made using PayPal, Apple could cut its own costs and those of retailers selling Apple products considerably.

“NFC is definitely one of the technologies that’s getting a lot of attention, but ultimately the consumer is going to choose,” said Charlotte Hill, a spokeswoman for PayPal, owned by San Jose, California-based EBay. Elvira Swanson, a spokeswoman for San Francisco-based Visa, said the company is “excited to see NFC mobile devices coming into the market.”

Ed McLaughlin, chief emerging payments officer at MasterCard, said the company is “running the world’s fastest payment network, and that doesn’t need to be re-created.” MasterCard sees NFC “as an opportunity to partner with organizations” and already has run NFC payment trials around the world.

Apple has already built a prototype of a payment terminal designed for small business such as hairdresser and mom-and-pop stores which can be used to scan NFC enabled iPhones and iPad’s according to Mr. Doherty, who says that Apple is considering either subsidizing the terminals heavily or even giving them away free of charge to retailers, which would have the effect of encouraging the quick national adoption of the technology, and stimulate additional iPad and iPhone sales.

Last year Apple applied for a patent on a system that it had developed which uses NFC to share information between applications running various Apple devices.
