11-Inch MacBook Air Cleared By TSA For Airport Security

October 29, 2010 · Filed Under Apple, Apple Computers, Apple Mac Computers · Comment

Last week Apple unveiled its new MacBook Air range and the 11-inch version has been pre-approved for airport security in the US by the Transport Security Administration (TSA), which means travelers carrying an 11-inch MacBook Air are not required to take the machine out of the bag for inspection at security checkpoints in the US.

The TSA has certified the netbook as a result of its size and according to the TSA the 11-inch MacBook Air was green lit to stay inside the carrier bag is because it is “smaller than a standard-size laptop” and is classified in the same category as an iPad, e-reader and netbook.

The question remains however is where exactly the government draws the “small item” line and how does it go about setting the definition. It turns out there’s no easy answer.

The TSA has yet to arrive at a decision in the case of the 13-inch MacBook Air, though according to a TSA spokesperson, the government views anything similar in size to an iPad as generally being safe enough to remain in its bag. The spokesperson however, was unable to provide any specific guidelines as to what differentiates small portable electronic items from laptops.

Instead of worrying about the size of your gadget, perhaps the more pragmatic option is to use a checkpoint friendly laptop case.

Rumours Suggest Dell Planning Android Version Of Venue Pro

October 28, 2010 · Filed Under Dell Computers, Dell Computers News, Dell News, Smart-Phones · Comment

For some people the new mobile phone operating system, Windows Phone 7 developed by Microsoft is just not their cup of tea. If that happens to be the case for you, that doesn’t mean the sexy new Venue Pro handset manufactured by Dell is not an option for you.

Earlier this month, Microsoft launched with much fanfare the arrival of Windows Phone 7, and announced it was partnering with Dell to offer handsets at its launch, most notably the Venue Pro, which is incredibly slick and has a portrait slide out QWERTY keyboard.

Dell recently announced that it is also working on an Android version of the super slick phone and according to PC World has plans of releasing a version of the Venue Pro which runs the Google mobile OS. The magazine though does not cite the source for its claim

The Venue Pro packs a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, a 4.1-inch display, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a 5-megapixel camera and Dell Australia will probably release the phone sometime next year.

Taiwanese Company Challenges Apple Ownership Of iPad Trademark

October 28, 2010 · Filed Under Apple, Apple Computers, Apple Mac Computers, Tablet · Comment

Proview a struggling Taiwanese computer screen contract manufacturer is threatening to initiate legal action against Apple for allegedly infringing trademarks the company says it owns.

“We will sue them for damages in China and in the US,” Yang Rongshan, Proview’s chairman, told the Financial Times.

Proview claims it owns the rights to the iPad tablet computer name, and should its claim be upheld by the courts, Apple may face additional costs.

Over a decade ago, Proview unsuccessfully tried to market a tablet computer which it called the I-Pad. The company registered trademarks for the IPAD name in several countries across South East Asia, Mexico and the EU between 2000 and 2004.

So far Apple has won injunctions in Hong Kong and Shenzhen which prevent Proview from selling the IPAD name. The courts however have yet to arrive at a decision over the issue of ownership.

Apple for its part says it will not comment on the legal action.

Proview’s Yang said that in 2006 the company entered into an agreement to sell the global trademark for the IPAD name to company which was registered in the US which called itself the IP Application Development. The trademark was sold for US$55,104 and Proview says that at the time it was not aware of any link between the buyer and Apple.

Mr. Yang however goes on to claim that despite the sale, the trademarks for China were not part of the agreement.

“It is arrogant of Apple to just ignore our rights and go ahead selling the iPad in this market, and we will oppose that,” Mr Yang said. “Besides that, we are in big financial trouble and the trademarks are a valuable asset that could help us sort out part of that trouble.”

Dell Tops Apple In Environmental Friendliness

October 27, 2010 · Filed Under Dell Computers, Dell Computers News, Dell News · Comment

A new report issued by an environmental watchdog group has ranked computer manufacturer Dell highly for initiating a program that enables its customers to easily return used products for recycling by the company. Ironically rival Apple which regularly cites its green credentials received average grades for its recycling program.

The report was undertaken by the Electronics Take Back Coalition and assess manufacturers on the basis of the number of recycling drop of centres each maker has, the number of devices that have been handed in for recycling, and the methods used by manufacturers in recycling returned items.

Barbara Kyle, national director of the group lauded Dell for the company’s efforts over the last couple of years in establishing an infrastructure which receives, processes and recycles its own used products.

According to Miss Kyle, just a couple of years ago, Dell’s recycling program was nothing more than an offer by the company to recycle products mailed back by its customers. Since then Dell has established drop off centres at stores across the United States, and has entered into a partnership with Goodwill drop off sites, that accepts used computers manufactured by Dell.

Contrastingly, Apple, which regularly makes claims about the level of its environmental friendliness managed to receive only an average grade for its recycling program. The reason behind the poor mark is that though the company does have a mail back program, the company will only accept its used products for recycling at its stores when customers purchase a new product. The company does not allow customers to just drop off a used device for recycling at one of its stores, and only accepts used non Apple devices at its stores with a $30 surcharge.

For its part Apple says customers do have the option of dropping of old iPhones for recycling, with the company offering a 10 per cent discount of the purchase price of a new iPod for customers who bring in their old one for recycling.

The report also gave poor marks to Apple for its lack of transparency over the level of recycling it is actually doing. “Apple doesn’t disclose volume information, and doesn’t provide any way to evaluate whether Apple is collecting high volumes in non-mandated states in addition to states that require it to,” the report states.

Apple Once Again Delays White iPhone 4 Release

October 27, 2010 · Filed Under Apple, Apple Computers, Apple Mac Computers, Smart-Phones · Comment

On Tuesday, Cupertino California based Apple once again said it would delay the launch of its eagerly awaited white coloured iPhone, until spring of 2011.

Apple launched the latest incarnation of its popular handset, the iPhone 4 in June, however the company delayed releasing the white model of the phone, first to the end of July. The company then said it would release a white model at the end of the year, and has now further clarified that a white iPhone 4 will be available next year at the earliest.

“We’re sorry to disappoint customers waiting for the white iPhone again,” Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller. She declined to explain the delay.

Apple has never specified the exact reasons behind the delay in releasing the model, nor what problems it faces in manufacturing. The company so far has only said that a white iPhone was “more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected.”

Apple focused blogs have been reporting rumours of a white iPhone for months, with some suggesting that problems range from colour matching to issues with the backlight of the device.

Despite the delay in launching a white model of the iPhone, Apple has had little trouble shifting the iPhone, which has fuelled the growth of the company over the last few years.

Apple shifted 14.1 million units of the iPhone during its most recent quarter, a rise of 91 per cent, and a sales value of $8.6 billion.

Despite the company initially have problems in keeping up with demand, the iPhone is now available in 89 countries.
