Security Flaw On iPhone App Results In Thousands Of Private Photos Circulating On The Web
An embarrassing security flaw on the Apple iPhone application has resulted in thousands of intimate photos sent between users becoming public.
iPhone users who installed the Quip app, which was designed to let people send photos to another for free, found their private photos enter into the public domain.
What the makers of the Quip app failed to mention, was that anyone who has basic internet skills could access the images as well.
Quip stored the private images on a publicly accessible web server without any encryption, making them easy prey for savvy internet users.
As a result the most private moments of thousands of users have been made public and are being circulated on the internet.
Many photos show people having sex or in the nude (though we are not quite sure why people feel compelled to take those kind of photos, still each to their own). Others are fairly innocuous, and show people enjoying a day out at a baseball game, or baby photos.
One very disturbing image shows a half naked man, covered in what looks like cuts and blood, whilst another photo seems to have been taken in the White House.
To add insult to injury, some internet users have managed to make the connection between the people in the photos and their real names courtesy of their Facebook profile.
Internet message boards were set ablaze with outrage once the security flaw emerged, and one poster who identified himself as one of the makers of Quip App said the system had been shut down.
On one web forum, a user identifying as one of the makers of the Quip app said the system had been shut down.
“As soon as this post came to our attention, we immediately shut down our servers. We have also now disabled all S3 access and have started to systematically secure all files in the system. We will not bring the system back up until we have adequate security around all files shared over Quip.”
However many of the photos, saved by people before the servers were shut down, are still being circulated.
Dell Finally Breaks The High End Laptop Market With Adamo XPS And Alienware M11x
For years computer manufacturing giant Dell has struggled to break in to the high end ultra chic laptop space currently dominated by Apple and Sony. Unfortunately the brand is largely synonymous with low cost, high volume 15-inch laptops.
Given that Dell laptops could be best described as your mum’s laptop manufacturer, it was a pleasant surprise that the company’s two most recent high end laptop offerings, the super slim 13-inch Adamo XPS, and the 11-inch Alienware M11x gaming netbook hit all the right notes with consumers, even if it is unlikely that the two models shift in large volumes.
Dell and its Australian Subsidiary Dell Australia have chased the holy grail of high end design laptops for years, most recently by acquiring speciality game PC maker Alienware. However its high end ambitions have largely remain unfulfilled, with the vast majority of its products entrenched in dorm room aesthetics.
Consumers have been able to order Dell products in a wide variety of designs and colours for a few years now. Its most promising offering, the original Adamo laptop, which the company cloaked in Apple like secrecy was marketed as being “a luxury-brand notebook design for the luxury-conscious consumer,” according to the company.
The final result however did not quite live up to expectations, producing a MacBook Air clone, that cost too much, and was too heavy (thought we must admit it did look nice).
With that sort of history, the expectations for Dell’s latest attempt to break the high end laptop segment were hardly feverish.
The Adamo XPS though is superb, super slim at 9.99 mm thick, it is something you need to experience in person to be able to appreciate. Its large footprint made it feel very much like a 15-inch laptop in spite of the smaller 13-inch screen. It’s only drawback was its battery life, which as you would expect for something so clearly designed for portability, did not last as long as we would have liked.
The other luxury offering from Dell is its Alienware M11x, a laptop that costs less than US$1000, but was still sleek enough to fit snugly into a messenger bag.
The M11x feels on slightly heavier than other 11-inch systems yet provides improved performance, albeit for a higher price compared to run of the mill netbook aesthetics. Compared to other 11-inch products, the M11x provides a great backlit keyboard, boasting edge to edge glass and comes with a 1,366×768-pixel display.

Apple Delays Shipping New iPad Orders
By all accounts, the level of pre-orders Cupertino California based Apple has taken for its much hyped tablet device the iPad is going swimmingly.
Despite the level of demand, Apple recently updated its website saying that it expects to ship new orders for the iPad by April 12th, a move widely expected by Apple watcher blogs such as AppleInsider.
For those that were wise enough to pre-order the product, the delivery date remains unchanged and they will receive the Wi-Fi model on April 3rd as promised. Those who procrastinated in placing their order however, will have to wait a little longer to get their hands on the tablet.
Pre-order customers had the choice of either picking up their iPad in store, or having home delivery. Home delivery however now seems to be an option that has been removed from the company’s website.
The iPad Wi-Fi + 3G is still scheduled to ship in late April, according to Apple’s Web site.
There has been speculation that Apple is experiencing difficulty with its supply chain, with suppliers unable to provide enough components to meet the level of demand. By delaying the delivery date for new orders, it appears that pre-orders account for the entirety of Apple’s available stock.
Though the number of units ordered has been the subject of much debate, no one outside of Apple knows for sure just how many iPads have actually been ordered.
Some sources suggest that the company has already sold hundreds of thousands of iPads since pre-orders began on March 12th, with those sources also speculating that they expect the first three months sales of the product to outshine even the iPhone.
Apple has also added a new iPad accessory, which is available for preorder. The iPad Camera Connection Kit allows the user to connect their camera directly to the iPad.

Apple Buys iPad Trademark From Fujitsu Less Than Two Weeks Before Launch
There are thousands of people out there waiting with bated breath to receive their iPad which has been on pre-sale for the last few weeks, and will be in the hands of consumers at the end of this week (April 3rd).
Few people however are aware of the posturing that has gone on behind the scenes over the name of the tablet. When Apple first announced it would be launching a tablet device, which it dubbed the iPad, it did not even own the trademark for the name.
The iPad was actually owned by Japanese tech giant Fujitsu, whom after some intense negotiation has sold the products trademark name to Apple just in time for the iPad to go on sale this week.
According to a U.S. Patent and Trademark Office document tracked down by a blog last week. Apple officially acquired the iPad trademark from Fujitsu on March 17th.
Though it was not disclosed exactly how much Apple paid Fujitsu for the trademark, one can only assume given the company announced the product name months before it went on sale, that the amount of money that will have changed hands will not have been small.
Fujitsu had owned the trademark for iPad since 2003.
This is not the first time Cupertino California based Apple has had to engage in legal posturing to gain access to a trademark it wanted to use. Prior to the launch of the iPhone, it emerged that the trademark owner was in fact Cisco.
When Apple launched the iPhone in early 2007, the networking giant waited a week before it sued Apple. The two companies eventually reached an agreement, part of which was that both companies could use the name for their products, Apple for its smartphone and Cisco for a VoIP phone.

Dell Denies It Plans To Stop Sourcing From China
Round Rock Texas based computer manufacturing giant Dell has denied claims made by the Indian government, that Dell chief executive Michael Dell in his discussion with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that the company was considering moving its procurement from China to a “safer environment.”
“There was no discussion concerning any change in how or from where Dell will source component parts for the computers it manufactures in Asia,” Minari Shah, a Dell spokeswoman, said in an emailed statement last week.
Mr. Singh reportedly told members of India’s influential Planning Commission, that Dell currently “sources equipment and parts worth $25 billion from China. They would like to shift to safer environment with a climate conducive to enterprise with security of legal system. So I think this is an area where there are immense opportunities,” he said in the speech.
The website which usually hosts copies of Mr. Singh’s official speeches, no longer carries the remarks, removing the text of the speech after Dell contacted the Indian press office Mr. Shah said.
Mr. Singh’s comments were perhaps badly timed and came after the row between search engine giant Google and the Chinese government came to a head, with Google effectively pulling out of China, ceasing to filter search results on its Chinese search engine, which has been re-routed to its Hong Kong site.
Fears of corporate xenophobia have erupted, and the timing of Mr. Singh’s comments played into those fears, though in all likelihood it was neither Mr. Singh’s nor Mr. Dell’s intention to have their conversation linked to the Google China spat.
Dell declined comment on March 23 when asked about Google’s decision.
