PC Sales Starting To Rebound
Global PC sales are expected to rebound in the third quarter of this year signaling that IT spending will be on the rise in the following months, according to new research released on Wednesday.
According to the IDC Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker Report, demand has been fuelled by back to school purchases resulting in an increase of 2.3 per cent, following declines for the previous three consecutive quarters.
IDC says it expects to see double digit growth next year, and expects that desktop shipments will continue to be flat, whilst portable computers are expected to drive next years growth.
“As commercial spending recovers in 2010, we expect to see robust growth over the next several years,” said Loren Loverde, program director at IDC Worldwide Trackers, in a statement.
Laptops were the driving force behind the third quarter increase in shipments and increased by 33.5 per cent from the previous year.
Netbook shipments also surged in the third quarter, accounting for 28 per cent of all portable computer shipments, almost double the 14 per cent they accounted for in the previous year.
Netbook shipment growth is expected to continue to grow at a lower rate than laptops, as new ultra-thin laptops are cannibalizing sales and creating added competition
Superslim Notebooks All The Rage
These days the line over what constitutes a superslim laptop is increasingly blurred. There is no real formal criteria for what makes a laptop superslim.
Roughly speaking as a rule of thumb though, the notebook should not weigh any more than three pounds, and should not have a thickness exceeding an inch.
Computer manufacturers Dell and Asus have been championing the quest for both slimmer and lighter notebooks, and both have recently announced new laptops which fit the criteria of superslim, which seems to lie somewhere in between Netbook and conventional notebook.
Generally superslim laptops cost as much or more than either of those two varieties.
Asus recently launched its UX30 in Japan which retails for approximately $1230, and boasts a 3 pound aluminium chasis and is jus 0.77 inches thin, which is slim by anyone’s measure of the word.
The Dell Vostro V13 which we blogged about earlier in the week sells for roughly $504 and weighs in at a little heavier 3.5 pounds and is even thinner at 0.65 inches.

Dell To Launch Touch Screen Desktop’s and Laptops
Computer manufacturing giant Dell has announced the launch of two touch screen enabled systems. The touch screen systems include a laptop and will run using the Windows 7 operating system.
The desktop model officially known as Insprion One 19, is an all in one system with a 19 inch screen that should have a starting price of roughly $890.
The laptop which has been dubbed the Studio 17 is the first laptop offering from dell with touch screen capability, The starting price for the Studio 17, which has a 17.3 inch screen has yet to be revealed, but is expected to start retailing later this December.
Dell says it is primarily targeting home user customers, a segment it believes will have particularly strong demand for touch screen enabled products.
David Clifton, director of consumer marketing for Dell Europe said:”Touch-screen makes computing easy and fun for all ages, and both products perform as well as being stylish, so they can handle the common tasks we all use at home every day.”
